Inter-AS MPLS VPN Option B is a widely used method for enabling secure and scalable MPLS VPN connectivity between different Autonomous Systems (ASes). Unlike Option A, which requires VRF-to-VRF peering, Option B allows for the exchange of VPN labels via MP-eBGP between ASBRs, reducing operational complexity.
With this approach, service providers can establish direct BGP sessions between ASBRs to advertise labeled VPN routes while keeping the MPLS forwarding plane intact. This method offers better scalability, reduced configuration overhead, and improved routing efficiency compared to Option A.
However, since ASBRs must store and manage customer VPN routes, careful route filtering and policy controls are required to maintain security and optimal performance in multi-provider networks.
