Inter-AS MPLS VPN Option C is a highly scalable approach that enables end-to-end MPLS label switching across multiple Autonomous Systems (ASes) without exposing internal infrastructure details. Unlike
Option A (VRF-to-VRF peering) and Option B (MPLS label exchange via MP-eBGP), Option C uses BGP Labeled Unicast (BGP-LU) to distribute labels between ASes, allowing for efficient forwarding without needing ASBRs to maintain VPN routes. This method improves scalability, convergence, and traffic engineering capabilities, making it ideal for large service providers needing seamless MPLS VPN transport across global networks.
With full end-to-end MPLS switching, Option C eliminates double lookups, optimizing data plane efficiency.
