IKEv2 (Internet Key Exchange version 2) is a robust and modern protocol suite used for establishing secure, authenticated VPN tunnels. Specifically, IKEv2 site-to-site VPNs, also known as LAN-to-LAN VPNs, create encrypted connections between two networks, often geographically separated, allowing them to communicate securely over a public network like the internet. IKEv2 offers several advantages over its predecessor, IKEv1, including improved security through stronger cryptographic algorithms and key exchange mechanisms, enhanced performance with optimized packet processing and reduced latency, and greater flexibility in supporting various authentication methods, such as pre-shared keys, digital certificates, and Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP). A key feature of IKEv2 is its support for Mobility and Multihoming (MOBIKE), which allows VPN connections to remain active even when the IP address of one of the endpoints changes. Furthermore, IKEv2's simplified message exchange and support for Dead Peer Detection (DPD) contribute to faster connection establishment and more efficient handling of network outages. When configuring an IKEv2 site-to-site VPN, administrators must define security policies, including the encryption and authentication algorithms to be used, the Diffie-Hellman groups for key exchange, and the lifetime of the Security Associations (SAs) that govern the VPN connection. Properly configured IKEv2 site-to-site VPNs provide a highly secure and reliable solution for connecting remote offices, branch locations, or cloud environments, enabling seamless and protected communication between them.
