IKEv2 (Internet Key Exchange version 2) is a robust and modern protocol suite used for establishing secure, authenticated VPN tunnels. Specifically, IKEv2 site-to-site VPNs, also known as LAN-to-LAN VPNs, create encrypted connections between two networks, often geographically separated, allowing them to communicate securely over a public network like the internet. IKEv2 offers several advantages over its predecessor, IKEv1, including improved security through stronger cryptographic algorithms and key exchange mechanisms, enhanced performance with optimized packet processing and reduced latency, and greater flexibility in supporting various authentication methods, such as pre-shared keys, digital certificates, and Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP).
